Announcement

Secret's out:

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (CNN) — Veteran Republican operative Rich Galen has signed on as a senior advisor to former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tennessee, who is exploring a bid for the GOP presidential nomination.

Galen, author of the popular political cyber column MULLINGS, is well known in GOP circles for his savvy political communications skills. He often provides political analysis on CNN.

“Assuming he gets into the race, I think Fred Thompson may well be the best combination of insider-outsider experience and possess the kind of new ideas that don’t exist in either party,” Galen said.

Thompson is expected to make a formal announcement after Labor Day.

Thoughts?

Watch your back(s). From the flak that Thompson's already taking, it's pretty clear that somebody on the other side shares your opinion of him.

Rich,

I told the RNC on Thursday, I would not send them a check until 30 days after Fred announces, to see if he has the Reagan like conservative message, and the "Say what I mean, Mean what I say" message.

Do you think I will be sending the RNC a check this year?

Two questions -

1. Does The Lad, therefore, land with Thompson as well?

2. A little inside baseball - does Thompson picking up Galen send a "Thompson's going to be the southern conservative in '08 - butt out" message to Newt?

July 22, 2007 6:45 PM
Blogger Rich Galen said...

As to what The Lad will be doing ... he doesn't know yet, but one Galen per campaign appears to be the current limit.

As to Newt he was quoted by the AP on Saturday as saying if Thompson gets in, it makes it less likely that he (Newt) will enter the race.

Newt is the headliner at Grover Norquist's breakfast Monday morning. I'll report on what he says after that.

Rich,
I began considering my eventual vote some time ago, when I decided that I did not care for the media's choice of possible Republican candidates. McCain, Romney, et.al. and I settled fairly early on that Fred Thompson, "if he chose to run" would have my vote. I am pleased to see that you have decided to work for/support him and i trust your judgement as well as my own. Welcome aboard Rich, And I hope we will be congratulating President Thompson on the morning of 9 november 2008.

He looks like one of the best communicators on our side.
Fred is really going after opportunities in the new media, and is building an audience in an old one- radio. The 'blogosphere' is growing rapidly, but I'd take 'radio roots' over 'net roots' - I bet there are more voters among Paul Harvey's audience than Daily Kos' audience!

I am Iowa Republican, looking forward to the Caucus next January.

Good for you Rich. You've certainly taken on a big challenge. Thompson has broad appeal right now, mostly because of his T.V. and movie work, and because his views are largely unknown. He comes across as a wise conservative guy, but nobody really knows where he stands. As a conservative voter, I want to know:

1. Is he too old? There is speculation that he is running a savvy viral/internet campaign because he lacks the energy to be out on the stump every day.

2. Is he really a true conservative? His background (Hollywood) reminds one of Reagan, but is he Reagan II or Arnold II?

Right now, I lean toward Romney and Giuliani, because I think they have broader appeal in the general election and because there is no genuine conservative candidate (Reagan, Gingrich) in the race yet.

Congratulations! I’m tickled that you’ve been asked to work for Fred; I’m a FredHead myself.

Ask Fred something for me, please: “If we elect you, do you promise to stay in character?”

How does he feel about repealing the 17th Amendment? And how about that 16th, huh?

I don't think it's ethical or right to pay for an elected Senate that votes itself 10 pay raises before the minimum wage ever gets one. A lot of people don’t know about the 17th Amendment, and they no longer ordinarily make students learn how our government was originally set up to be completely different. The fact that Senators are elected is IMO what has caused most of the problems we have with government and laws today. But it's been like the weather ... everybody talks about it, nobody does anything. Will Fred? Please?

I am SO pleased to hear this news. I've had my eye on Thompson for a while now, but Guiliani's recent picks for his foreign policy team made me think twice. Fred choosing you is a smart move that increases my confidence in his judgement -- confidence that was already fairly high.

From what I've read and heard so far, Fred appears to be a thinker as well as a good communicator, though many seem to give him short shrift on the former. Do you think I've pegged him corrrectly? My favorite thing about him is the lack of b.s. He just cuts right to the chase, calls a spade a spade, and gets on with it. So refreshing!

About Newt...he's a visionary, a fantastic generator of fresh ideas, but probably not truly a leader as such. He's almost a one-man think tank, which makes him a tremendous resource that ought to be tapped somehow by a Thompson administration. I wonder in what capacity he'd be willing to serve? I would wish for it to be something that allows him to teach and motivate and generate healthy change while curbing the "lightning-rod" factor as much as possible. Probably that's an unreaslistic wish list...

The rush to embrace a hack like Fred Thompson, who had such an unaccomplished career in the Senate (quick--name one bill or anything else for which he's remembered), says far more about the other candidates than about this former lobbyist for birth control and abortion advocates. And the really sad thing is that he no doubt is the best candidate from an electability perspective and will probably be the next president. Just what we need, another intellectually lazy president after eight years of W and his lap dog attorney general. Did they find W's brain when he had his colonoscopy? Or his veracity? An electorate in which 30% of the people still believe that Sadam was behind 9/11 and that there were weapons of mass destruction deserves no better.

Trophy wife! Senator Thompson has been a batchelor for many years. The press and the Dems are just jealous because she's young, pretty and smarter than most of them, (and probably their wives, too-)

What do you know about Spencer Abraham being on the Thompson team?
Debbie Schlussel has some things to say about him regarding his support for CAIR and other Islamist organizations. This from Brigitte Gabriel's newletter, American Congress for Truth,

"As a conservative--but more important, as an American concerned about the future of this country in the face of a terrorist threat--Thompson's choice of Spencer Abraham was the final nail in the coffin for me in opposing Fred Thompson's quest for the White House.

I know Spencer Abraham. He wrote one of my recommendations for law school. And the Spencer Abraham that I and all of America have since experienced is bad news for everyone except CAIR, ADC, MPAC, ISNA, and all Islamists who want to endanger America."
