  • "... USA Today ..." Here's a link to the USA Today piece on Afghanistan.
    This is a photo of the photo by Ami Vitale which was on the front page of USA Today. For reasons which are not immediately apparent to me, USA Today did not post this photo along with the story.

    USA Today, it appears, was trying to find a new "Afghan Woman" like the one which graced the cover of National Geographic Magazine in 1985. After the defeat of the Taliban, Geographic photographer, Steve McCurry went back and found the same woman, who was identified as Sharbat Gula, by comparing the iris patterns in her eyes:
