    This is the side of a mountain in the Exit Glacier National Park in Alaska. I asked an older guy whether I was looking at what used to be a glacier.

    "No," he said. "That's just snow melt."

    "Oh," I said. "I guess I've been conditioned to think that's a result of global warming."

    "You know what we call an area where there used to be a glacier, but now it's just dirt?"

    "No. What?" I asked.

    "Wine Country."

    And then he walked off cackling and shaking his head.
