Of Presidents & Kings

Wednesday, June 2, 2004

  • TITLE: "Of Presidents & Kings" I think this might be from a famous quote, but I Googled it and didn't come up with a decent citation.

[LATER] A thousand of you have sent the proper citation which is:

'The time has come,' the Walrus said,
    'To talk of many things:
    Of shoes---and ships---and sealing wax---
    Of cabbages---and kings.'
    Lewis Carroll 1832-98: Through the Looking-Glass (1872)

It is not immediately clear to me how - or why - I equated "cabbages" with "presidents" but, as I noted before, I'm only about a week away from the Mullings Director of Standards & Practices pinning my home addres to my lapel when I leave the house in the morning.

  • Mullfoto of the Day:

This past weekend Washington, DC welcomed thousands of veterans of World War II. Many of these brave men and women do not find walking as easy as it once was. A significant number are encumbered by wheel chairs and walking canes.

Thus, it was a surprise to me that, a few blocks from the new WWII Memorial and only two blocks from the White House, this was the state of the access ramp from the street to the sidewalk.

Note the cleverly placed pothole at the top of the ramp. This caught my eye because a couple - well older than I - was pushing a man - well older than they - who was in a wheel chair and they got stuck in this hole.

    Bad advance.
