Elementary Politics - Part 1

Friday, January 4, 2002

  • TITLE: "Elementary Politics - Part 1" This will be the first in a year-long series of columns to help you understand basic political theory. Or, at least, the world of politics as I see it.

  • "… Secure your base …" The base can be defined as voters who vote in their party's elections even when their party is fielding a weak candidate against the other side's strong candidate.

  • "… Zogby poll …" When I found this, I was surprised I hadn't read anything about it. The numbers are extraordinary. Here is a link to that poll. Those data I referenced are in the middle of the second graf.

  • "… Tom Daschle …" People write to me and ask, "Rich. Why are we raising the ID of Tom Daschle?" My answer is: The GOP has a base, too and Daschle is useful as someone that the Administration can push against.
