Interesting Tales

Rich Galen

Friday August 13, 2004

From New York City

  • Some things which caught my eye while on a one-day trip to the Big Apple to look over the site of the Republican National Convention later this month.

  • Headline: "Farmed Salmon Raise Concerns: Study Cites High Levels of Chemical Fire Retardants" - Washington Post, 8/11.

  • I saw this looking over the shoulder of a person on the Delta Shuttle from Washington Reagan National Airport to La Guardia. My first thought was, "Flame retardant Salmon? Now if they made flame retardant chicken breasts, my grilling technique would improve dramatically."

  • My second thought was "This has got to cut down on the alarming number of spontaneous combustion cases in America."

  • My third thought was "John Kerry is going to claim he celebrated New Years Eve sharing with his loving crew that Seared Cambodian Salmon he had caught, at great personal risk, on Christmas Eve."

  • Alas, Juliet Eilperin's piece had to do with flame retarding chemicals, having leeched into the water supply, which may be found in higher concentrations among farm-raised Salmon than among those caught in the wild.

  • This was a great one: In a piece headed, "Do Me a Favor, Keep a Lid on Your Double Latte," Washington Post staff writer Roxanne Roberts reported on the activities of a woman from Silver Spring, Maryland who "staged a nurse-in at her local Starbucks on Sunday."

  • It seems that the woman not only wants to feed her kid in public whenever and where ever she wants, but she "is pressuring Starbucks to enact a national corporate policy stating that mothers will 'never be asked to leave, cover, move, or hide' when breast-feeding."

  • When she's not lactating, the woman is - and this is true, according to the article - "a conflict resolution trainer."

  • For which she is in high demand, I'm sure.

  • Turns out that the Democratic National Convention was slightly less profitable to Beantown than had been hoped - about $139.2 million less profitable. According to Matt Viser's NY Times blip, the convention "gave Boston's economy only a $14.8 million lift, far short of the $154 million that city officials had projected, a study by a research organization has found."

  • On the plus side, (A) The group had originally forecast an $8 million loss; (B) There was very little traffic so I could go where I wanted very quickly, and; (C) Kerry didn't get any bounce.

  • That WAS a successful convention!

  • This isn't funny, but it seems Niger (Nah-ZHEER) and Chad (Chad) are suffering from an infestation of locusts. According to the UK Mail & Guardian "Millions of the finger-length insects have deluged the desert nations devouring seedlings and existing crops of millet and sorghum."

  • Here's my excellent idea: Let's send "Spyin'" Joe Wilson over there - you remember him? He's the only person in all of Niger who didn't know the Iraqis were trying to buy Plutonium - have him sit in the same bar, drink the same sweet mint tea, talk to the same people, and see if he uncovers any locusts.

  • Hey, Joe! You'll recognize them. They're finger-length. That's about this long.

  • Finally, there was a headline on the front page of the Washington Post's free daily news summary which is called "The Express," which read "Warrants issued for Chalabis."

  • I read this through the front window of my local Starbucks so my dyslexia kicked in and I thought it said, "Warrants issued for Chablis."

  • "Whatever," I fretted, teetering on the brink of a projectile-sweat panic-attack, "shall we drink with our Brie at the early-autumn steeplechases?"

  • Of course the headline had to do with Ahmad Chalabi and his nephew, Salem, being charged with counterfeiting in Iraq.

  • I suspect I may have been distracted by the thought of waking up early enough this Sunday to check and see if there will be a nurse-in at our Starbucks.

  • On the Secret Decoder Ring Page today: Links to all the above stories. A Mullfoto of Hall-of-Fame quarterback John Elway, and a great Catch Caption of the Day!
