Will Imus Wear Blue Suits and White Shirts?

Wednesday, November 10, 1999

I TOLD you not to come here today.

  • Title: "Will Imus Wear Blue Suits and White Shirts?" At a fundraiser for spina-bifida in Washington a week ago, Al Gore appeared in a cowboy hat and western denim jacket as part of the roast of Don Imus.

  • "Here's the question I wanted …" listening to the interview, which was done by phone, I had the distinct impression that Gore was being fed lines by a group of people in his office.

  • "This just in from our 'When Geniuses Flock' Department …" Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) is 81 years old. Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) is only 78 years old. Together, they bring 159 years of joint intellect to the U.S. Senate.

  • "… Alec Leamas…" was the protagonist in the John LeCarre novel of espionage, "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold." George Smiley, although he was introduced in this book, was not the star he was in later LeCarre novels.

  • "… David Schwimmer was not …" Schwimmer is an actor who is currently starring in the TV series, "Friends." This is a pun on Schwimmer's last name, which if it WERE Swimmer (which it is not), would be funny if he HAD been on the boat (which he was not).

  • "Abe Hirschfeld …" Hirschfeld is also awaiting a retrial on a tax evasion case which ended in a hung jury. After declared itself deadlocked, Hirschfeld offered each $2,500 and offered to take them to lunch. This is true.

"Hirschfeld is not planning to write …" The guy who wrote the book saying George W had been arrested on a cocaine charge was found to be out on parole for having been found guilty of hiring a hit man to kill his boss. It was the whole hiring the hit man thing.
