  • " Sister Boom-Boom ...": According to Wikipedia:
Sister Boom-Boom, the drag persona of astrologer Jack Fertig, is one of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. In 1982, she ran for a seat on the San Francisco board of supervisors on the "Nun of the Above" ticket. She received 23,124 votes but did not win. After she started campaigning for mayor in 1983 against incumbent Dianne Feinstein, San Francisco passed a law requiring candidates to use only their legal names on the ballot. This was commonly called the "Sister Boom-Boom Law".

During the time of the Democratic National Convention which was held in San Francisco in 1984, I spent a good deal of time and effort making sure that national reporters went to Union Square where Sister Boom-Boom and his troupe held court every day. It was a small, but highly effective mechanism to help define the concept of "San Francisco Democrats."

  • " Torricelli ...": Here's the link to CNN's coverage of the decision by the NJ Supreme Court to "liberally construe" New Jersey's election law which required a candidate's name to remain on the ballot starting 51 days prior to the election.

  • " National Conference of State Legislatures ...": Here's a link to the NCSL page on the Defense of Marriage Act.

  • " VA and TN Gay Marriage Positions ...": According to the National Journal's "Hotline"
In TN and VA, Democrats Ford and Webb say they oppose gay marriage. Webb supports civil unions, though, and he plans to vote against Virginia's so-called "Super-DOMA," which, according to gay rights activists and some legal scholars, would make it harder to establish civil union-type arrangements. Ford supports the Tennessee constitutional amendment. He also supported the FMA in the House.

  • " Reuters ...": Here's the link to the Reuters piece on the political effects of the gay marriage business.
