Mayberry

Monday October 1, 2001

  • TITLE: "Mayberry" The Andy Griffith Show (in which he played sheriff Andy Taylor) first went on the air on October 3, 1960, and ran for 249 episodes. It was a spin-off from an episode of the Danny Thomas show. At the time it was a spin-off, the term spin-off didn't exist. The Andy Griffith Show was the first one.

  • " Goober " From the TV Land Web Page:
George "Goober" Lindsey has made a career of playing Goober, Gomer Pyle's bungling cousin on The Andy Griffith Show. He played Goober on Hee Haw for 20 years while also making nightclub appearances as George "Goober" Lindsey in places like Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe.

Although perpetually typecast, Lindsey can be seen in reruns of Gunsmoke, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, M*A*S*H and Matlock. He also has appeared in several feature films, from The Blob in 1958 to Cannonball Run 2 in 1984. In the '90s, Lindsey guest-starred on shows such as NewsRadioand Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. He also penned an autobiography entitled Goober in a Nutshell.

  • " Surprise, surprise, surprise ..." This was a favorite saying of Gomer Pyle, but I believe Jim Nabors introduced it as part of his character in Gomer Pyle, USMC not as part of the Andy Griffith show.

Here is an e-mail sent from an ensign to his dad.

  •     Mullings' Catchy Caption of the Day:

Demonstrators in Washington over the weekend who, finding they had non-refundable tickets to the anti-IMF demonstrations, are seen during the hastily- organized anti-war demonstration wondering why no one takes them seriously.
