I've Grown Accustomed to Her Space

Monday September 18, 2000

  • TITLE: "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Space" A pun on the song "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" from the Lerner and Lowe musical My Fair Lady which was, of course, based upon the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw.

The Roman poet Ovid, in his Metamorphoses, invented Pygmalion, a sculptor, who made an ivory statue representing his ideal of womanhood and then fell in love with his own creation; the goddess Venus brought the statue to life in answer to his prayer. [Encyclopædia Britannica]

  • "… his boss buys his ink by the barrel …" A basic principle of politics is, "Never argue with a man who buys his ink by the barrel." The idea begin - don't argue with the local newspaper because the newspaper gets into every livingroom every day (or every week) and a candidate does not.

  • "Hoppy, Lucky, and Windy." Hoppy was played, of course, by William Boyd (1895-1972) who played the role of Hopalong Cassidy in over 60 feature films, over 100 TV episodes, and 104 radio episodes. The part of Lucky Jenkins was played by Russell Hayden. Windy was played by the famous George "Gabby" Hayes who later starred as Roy Rogers' sidekick "Gabby Whitaker." Hopalong Cassidy's horse was named "Topper."

  • " …Tim Russert would pull off his shirt …" Following the USA win in the 1999 women's World Cup soccer tournament, member Brandi Chastain pulled off her jersey in delight.

  • "Candygram for Mongo" A line from the Mel Brooks movie Blazing Saddles delivered by Cleavon Little as Sheriff Bart trying to capture Mongo played by Alex Karras.
