Seven-Eleven

Friday, July 11, 2003

  • TITLE: "Seven-Eleven" This is one of the best things about writing Mullings, the constant additions to the brain-attic of useless information I continue to gather.

    As an example:

Seven-Eleven was founded in 1927 when a clerk at the Southland Ice Company in Dallas, Texas started selling milk, bread, and eggs on nights and weekends when regular grocery stores were closed.

Recognizing an opportunity, the company opened several convenience stores (a phrase which did not exist then) named "Tote'm" stores - for toting groceries away.

If you have lived in Dallas (as I have) and you have wondered how the parent corporation came to be known as Southland Corp. (as I have) you now know the answer.

    But, as usual, too late.

The company changed its corporate name to Seven-Eleven (to which it had changed the store names from Tote'm Stores in 1946 to reflect, as Mullster Rob Schuler pointed out, the revolutionary nature of the store hours) in 1999.

Seven Eleven Corp is a subsidiary of the Japanese firm, Ito-Yokado Co., Ltd. which purchased a controlling interest in 1991.

See what I mean? Now you, like the Mullmeister, can bore the pants off your friends when they need to stop, on the way to the shore, at a Seven-Eleven for a Slurpee (introduced in 1966).

One of the nice things about Kuwait is the gentle way they make their point in matters of public safety.

  •     Mullings' Catchy Caption of the Day:

General Franks, we don't care that you freed two entire nations - Afghanistan and Iraq - from the horrors of the Taliban and Saddam. We don't care that, when we warned you would lose upwards of a thousand personnel. We don't care that you are one of the most successful military commanders in the history of the planet. What we want to know is - DID YOU WRITE THE PRESIDENT'S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS!?
