The Bump is Not a New Dance
Monday, February 21, 2000

  • TITLE: "The Bump is Not a New Dance" In the 60's and 70's there was a "New Dance Craze" being introduced about every three weeks. The Stroll, the Loco-motion, the Twist, the Mashed Potatoes were but a few.

  • "Bump" This is political shorthand for a spike in public opinion polls. A candidate who does well in a debate and shows an improvement in a subsequent poll is deemed to have "gotten a bump" from the debate.

  • "Super Tuesday" I know you know this but to review the bidding there are about 73 states which will have their primaries - Democratic and Republican - on Tuesday, March 7.

  • March 7th

    American Samoa - Democratic caucus
    California - Presidential primaries
    Connecticut - Presidential primaries
    Georgia - Presidential primaries
    Hawaii - Democratic caucuses
    Idaho - Democratic caucuses
    Maine - Presidential primaries
    Maryland - Presidential primaries
    Massachusetts - Presidential primaries
    Minnesota - Presidential caucuses
    Missouri - Presidential primaries
    New York - Presidential primaries
    North Dakota - Democratic caucuses
    Ohio - Presidential primaries
    Rhode Island - Presidential primaries
    Vermont - Presidential primaries
    Washington - Presidential caucuses

  • "… two days later …" The Bush campaign feels the toughest day they have had to face was the Thursday after the New Hampshire primary when the Zogby poll showed them trailing McCain by five. There was no guarantee, at that point, that the McCain surge would ever stop.

  • "The WPA…" I made this up. Relax. There IS no World Pundits Association.

  • "… including matching funds." Remember, Bush decided not to accept federal matching funds, McCain has accepted the funds. McCain is permitted to borrow against the amount of matching funds for which he has qualified, even if the funds have not yet been distributed.

  • "Bush Pioneers…" These are the people who committed to raise $100,000 each on behalf of the Bush campaign. After New Hampshire there was a great deal written about their unease with the direction of the campaign.
