It's Up To You New York, New York
Monday, February 7, 2000

  • TITLE: "It's Up To You New York, New York" From the song, "New York, New York" (Start spreadin' the news …).

  • "… that little matter of the FBI files …" Early in the Clinton Administration it was discovered that the White House had ordered the FBI files of former employees of the Reagan and Bush administrations. After what we have long since discovered to be the standard denials, delays, explanations, and finally pleas to "let's move forward, not look backwards" the whole thing was forgotten. Except by a significant number of the employees whose confidential files were put on more-or-less public display. They have filed a class-action lawsuit against the Administration. It is in that suit Hillary has been subpoenaed to be deposed.

  • "the Hillary-Rodham-Clinton-Rodham-Official-Former-First-Lady-Tossed-Salad-Recipe-Book…" In the 30-minute bio that was produced for Hillary's kick-off she is shown explaining that while she's not a great cook "I do a mean tossed salad." No surprise there. If Hillary does it, it is likely to be mean.

  • "Al, unable to scramble his air force pilots in time…" The pilots had used up their flight time and so were unavailable to fly Air Force II in anything but an emergency. Gore's stunningly inconsistent record on abortion was not considered sufficiently emergent to make the pilots bust the flight time rules so Al trouped off to LaGuardia Airport and took the shuttle to DC.

  • "The Little Red Book" Was a book of sayings by Chairman Mao. "Deep Thinkers" of the 1960's carried well-worn copies of the Little Red Book and discussed their meanings deep into the night. Many of these Deep Thinkers are now spending an equal amount of time on the internet buying and selling stocks for their 401k plans.

  • "…Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Up This Book" Is a pun on the famous plea by President Ronald Reagan at the Berlin wall when he urged the Russian leader to "Tear Down This Wall."
