  • " Ricola ...": Ricola is a product of a business owned by the Richterich family and is located in Laufen, Switzerland.

The name "Ricola" derives from the first two letters of the orginal company name and location: RIchterich & COmpany, LAufen.

  • " Lenny Skutnik ...": Mr. Skutnik is a true American hero. On a snowy night in January, 1982, an Air Florida plane leaving National Airport lost lift and crashed into the 14th Street Bridge and into the Potomac River.

Mr. Skutnik, an office worker, was driving home when he saw all the activity. He pulled over and saw that a flight attendant was struggling in the freezing water.

He jumped in and pulled her to safety.

A few days later, Mr. Skutnik was seated in the visitors' gallery and was the focus of remarks by President Ronald Reagan during his first State of the Union Address a few nights later.

"Just two weeks ago, in the midst of a terrible tragedy on the Potomac, we saw again the spirit of American heroism at its finestthe heroism of dedicated rescue workers saving crash victims from icy waters.

"We saw the heroism of one of our young government employees, Lenny Skutnik, who, when he saw a woman lose her grip on the helicopter line, dived into the water and dragged her to safety."

Another hero was a man named Arland Williams. Mr. Williams was on the flight but survived the crash. He was about to be rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter when he saw another flight attendent had become too weak to grasp a life line so he put her into the sling which hoisted her to safety.

By the time the sling could be lowered back down, Mr. Williams had drowned.

The official name of the 14th Street Bridge is the Arland Williams Memorial Bridge. We should use the name.

  • " IEDs ...": From Mullings of 12-28-06 "Stresses & Strains":
Before Christmas at a gathering of from civilian Iraq hands the subject of driving around things in the road came up. Everyone said they will still swerve to avoid any object - even a plastic Safeway bag.

    Now you understand why.

    Mullfoto of the Day

I absolutely agree with this sign. We should end road work. I'm sick and tired of driving over bumpy temporary pavements or completely around work zones.

I looked for the demonstrators so I could join them in demanding that we End Road Work, but they musta been taking a break.

    Catchy Caption of the Day

Theresa Heinz Rodham Kerry makes a point to an unidentifed participant in Davos, Switzerland where, according to the AP, the attendees

"talk of the issues facing the global community, ranging from security against terror to advancing human rights and the struggle against poverty and disease."

A nicely dressed John Kerry, sitting politely and quietly, legs tucked neatly under his chair, was also in attendance.
