For Want of a Nail...

Friday January 12, 2001

Go here to purchase an on-line copy of "The Plum Book"

  • TITLE: "For the Want of a Nail…" I couldn't find an original source, but a number of web references say this is an old nursery rhyme:
For want of a nail the shoe was lost,
For want of a shoe the horse was lost,
For want of a horse the rider was lost,
For want of a rider the battle was lost,
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

  • "…rejected the nomination of John Tower…" Tower had been a powerful Senator from Texas and had been Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. There was little doubt that he knew defense issues, but Tower was known to have a drinking problem and was known as having an eye for the ladies.
The Senate refused to confirm Tower, marking the first time the Senate had rejected the Cabinet appointment of an incoming administration.

  • On the matter of "Mullings' Catchy Captions of the Day" I'll start these up again following the inaugural when it's me, the internet, and old cowboy movies again.
