  • " Article I, Section 8 ...": Here's the text of the clause which describes the powers of Congress:
    To exercise exclusive legislation in all cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten miles square) as may, by cession of particular states, and the acceptance of Congress, become the seat of the government of the United States, and to exercise like authority over all places purchased by the consent of the legislature of the state in which the same shall be, for the erection of forts, magazines, arsenals, dockyards, and other needful buildings;

  • " Original D.C. Map ...": Here's a map from the early 1800's showing how the areas north (outlined in Yellow from Maryland) and south (outlined in Red from Virginia) of the Potomac River made up the "10 mile square""seat of government."

    The area outlined in Red now make up Arlington County (mostly to the north of that river running east to west) and Alexandria City (to the south).

    Cool, huh?

  • " More Fun Facts ...": Arlington County (which is the northern portion of the Red Zone) is the only county in Virginia which has no constituent towns or cities. Arlington County is it.

    Alexandria is a city which is attached to no county. Alexandria City is it.

    Nevertheless. Arlington County has a police department and Alexandria City has a Sheriff's Office.

    See? Absolutely primed for independence.

    Mullfoto of the Day

    Follow me here. This is a photo of the intersection of N. Washington and Pendleton Streets in the People's Republic of Old Town Alexandria. I go through this intersection at least twice a day and have never noticed a problem with the existing traffic lights.

    However, in this era of what must be huge budget surpluses the geniuses at City Hall have decided to replace a perfectly good traffic control system with a new pole, a new overhang and new lights.

    Maybe closing the library on Sundays is not such a good idea after all.

    Catchy Caption of the Day

    Actual Caption:

    The European Court of Human Rights Thursday awarded a Swiss transexual 15,000 euros (20,500 dollars) after her country's health insurance refused to pay for her sex change operation.

    Maybe the European Court of Human Rights awarded him the money after his country's insurance company refused to pay for his sex change operation.

    Oh, what a tangled web ...
