You Want Spin? I Got Spin.

* Elizabeth Dole has wisely kept her head down during this last 10-day period of news about Bush and drugs and McCain and abortion. The campaign is gathering itself to go on a policy blitz dealing with education, drugs, taxes, and fighting government waste starting after Labor Day.

* According to Dole's people they intend to use the policy statements to close the gap with George W which will, by inference, increase the gap against Quayle, McCain, and Forbes.

* Judging from the way he stretched out that referee's shirt last week, Jesse "The Body" Ventura has about twice as much body as he used to have. He has to get more exercise and he can start by pushing away those plates loaded with yummy Lutefisk.

* Let's see, Hillary Rodham Clinton Rodham is running for Senate in New York. New York has a large Puerto Rican population. Bill Rodham Clinton offers executive clemency to a bunch of terrorists connected to a group - the FALN - which, among other things, set off bombs which injured policemen.

* Meanwhile, former Symbionese Liberation Army fugitive Kathleen Soliah (who now goes by Sara Jane Olsen) was recently arrested for having put a bomb under a police car which did not go off. Unfortunately for her, she lives in Minnesota. Sara Jane ought to start a "Draft Hillary To Run Against Rod Grams" committee. She'd be free by the weekend.

* According to a Field poll, George W is leading all his major rivals among Republicans in California with 49 percent. Dole, Forbes, and McCain are tied at 8 percent each. The poll was in the field (no relation) during the fever phase of the Did-You-Use-Drugs flare up.

* Al "San-Andreas-Ain't-My-Fault" Gore and Bush are in a dead head in the general election match-up. That's not good news for Gore who has spent more time in California than he's spent in the Oval Office. He's spent more time in Buddhist Temples in California than he's spent in the Oval Office.

* In that same poll, Gore is leading Bill Bradley 51-18. Much was made of the fact that Warren Beatty - my personal choice for the Democratic nomination - got only one percent of the California Democratic primary vote. If I worked for Warren here's what yesterday's press release would have said:

Democratic Presidential candidate Warren Beatty today cheered the results of the latest Field poll which showed Former Senator Bill Bradley trailing Vice President Al Gore by 33 points while Beatty trails Bradley by only 17 points. "I have to get past Bradley to get to Gore,' Beatty said. I have cut Bradley's lead in half." Beatty campaign spokesman Rich Galen told reporters "Do the math. This campaign is on the move."

* Hope Springs Eternal, Dept: I visited the Nanostructures Laboratory web page the other day to see what's been going on in billionth-of-a-meter world. I was visitor number 000031 - since April 8, 1998. A counter with six places won't roll over until visitor number one million hits the site which, at the current rate, will occur at approximately 9:14 pm in the year 44,365. Everyone click on this URL: http://www.ee.princeton.edu/%7Echouweb/. They'll think they're on their way to a Nobel Prize.
