Bloomberg for President

Mike Bloomberg has left the Republican Party.

Who?

Exactly.

I got a call from ... Bloomberg News Service asking what I thought. This is - from memory - what I more-or-less said:

1. A short Jewish guy from New York is not going to play that well in Iowa, or South Carolina or Alabama.

NOTE: As a short Jewish guy from New York I'm allowed to say that. You're not.

2. It goes to show what happens when you have a couple of billion dollars and nothing to occupy your time.

3. There is already a Mayor from New York in this race.

4. It is hard as hell to get on the ballot as an independent. Ask Ross Perot.

5. Speaking of Ross Perot, call Ed Rollins (who ran Perot's campaign and actually LIVES in New York City) and see if he's involved with this.

6. Most Republicans understand Bloomberg only rented the GOP label so his leaving the GOP has no implications nation-wide.

7. How exactly is the Bloomberg News Service intending to cover the Bloomberg for President campaign? [Nervous laugh]

8. Bloomberg - like most New Yorkers - truely see the world the way Steinberg drew it in that famous New Yorker Magazine cover:

As a tall Scot-Irish guy from California, I can understand completely why only you can refer to Mr. Bloomberg (and yourself) as "a short Jewish guy from New York." When I was a child some 40+ years ago, my mother repeated a term used by a woman friend of hers who was of Italian heritage. Her friend quickly informed her that only Italians could use that term to describe themselves. And the Italian term had nothing to do with the woman's height...

Great blog.
Looks like Bloomberg.com:news didn't use your comments.
Too bad, their loss.

Wouldn't a Bloomberg run for President clip Mrs. Clinton's support?
-
How soon till the big national Chuck Hagel press conference to announce that he is 'not at this time' considering possibly at some point making up his mind or not about running as Mayor Bloomberg's Veep in his non-existent campaign?

Who - or if - a Bloomberg candidacy hurts is still up in the air. Mrs. Clinton is the front-runner and, if you were betting, the probably nominee, but she is stuck in the 30's in national polling among Dems.

That means somewhere between 60 and 70 percent of Democrats - Democrats - want someone other than Hillary Clinton.

Rich,
I agree that Bloomberg would have a nearly vertical uphill climb to the presidency. As you know, third parties have not fared will in national politics since TR and the Bull Moose bubbas.
I heard a comment this morning that a third party would have to be either far-left or far-right. I don’t believe that. In today’s political climate, a third party would have to convincingly fill the gaps left by the two big parties. That means running as a center-left party to avoid the moveon.org/code pinko stranglehold on the Dems, or as a farther right party to “out-conservative” the current crop of RINOs. Bloomberg, running with a Hagel, can’t fill either gap. Their platform would be too Liberal – pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, anti-gun – to satisfy the moderate Left in this country, and certainly way too Liberal to attract the Conservatives.
Bloomberg may be willing to spend $500 million, but all that will do is enhance the American economy, especially the ailing mainstream media.

Mike Bloomberg for President? Absolutely! If he ran he'd do very well. Join the draft effort!
