Yea, But What's the State of THEIR Union?

* Something appealing. Something appalling. Something for everyone. A policy tonight!

* Let’s stipulate: Clinton gives great State of the Union Address. This wasn’t his best, by any stretch, but it was pretty good by most standards. Having said that, let’s poke fun at it for the next 500 words.

* If he had wanted to influence Senators attending the speech, instead of Sammy Sosa, Bill Clinton should have invited Kyser Sosa to sit in the gallery and stare down at them. Now, THAT would have made a difference.

* Al Gore is going to go down in history as the first Animatronics Vice President: Smile. Nod. Stand. Clap. Smile. Nod. Stand. Clap. Smile. Nod. Stand. Clap.

* New calculations. Old stipulations. Something for everyone. A policy tonight!

* I was watching the speech with some friends at a restaurant where the text was scrolling across the bottom of the screen and I could only hear about every other word. I sat bolt upright when the President, apparently talking about education, said too many of our children can’t “master the basics.” I THOUGHT he had said, um, never mind.

* Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Services, should have been at work preparing a Social Security Reform bill to send to the Congress instead smiling, applauding, and making believe Clinton hadn’t lied to her for eight months.

* Every time the President said something to aggravate the hard left of the Democratic Party, he quickly gave something back. For instance, he talked about the need for Fast Track trade authority, but before the labor liberals could get up to full seethe – in the very next paragraph – he talked about extending child labor laws to overseas workers.

* Something revealing. Something concealing. Something for everyone. A policy tonight!

* Jennifer Dunn, giving half the Republican response, really hit on something when she said, “Our country is not in crisis. There are no tanks in the streets. Our system of government is as solid as the Capitol dome you see behind me.” That’s why the Impeachment Trial is such a yawn to most people. No matter what happens – he stays, he goes, he’s weak, he’s strong – America will go on. That belief is our greatest strength.

* Tim Russert said on Imus this morning that the speech was a little like the defendant, stopping a trial in the middle to take the jurors out for a party. Here, have a little party favor. Courtesy of the taxpayers.

* What was that “he-or-she” reference to a future President of the United States? Do you think that caused “Animatronics Al” to have a Prilosec Moment?

* When Bill introduced Hillary – proving there is no depth to which he won’t sink for this own ends – he looked up and mouthed “I love you.” I believe the look she gave him may have actually reversed global warming.

* Tragedy Tomorrow. Comity Tonight!
