Last Tango, Anywhere

* Some big time reporting is being done around Washington this morning suggesting the liberal political organization, People for the American Way, has had television ads produced in support of Bill Clinton for airing during the Senate trial. As of yesterday afternoon Democratic media gurus had reportedly begun placing orders for advertising time.

* A senior reporter indicated there was such a huge amount of projectile sweat at the advertising agency when they realized the story was getting out that the whole scheme may now be scrapped.

* This is such an enormously high risk deal because the Senate will perceive – correctly – that the White House is trying to influence the outcome of the trial by selling Presidential innocence like a used Yugo.

* Remember, this is crack White House political team which, since November 4th has gone from: -- The election results preclude the Judiciary Committee from proceeding on a party line vote; to, -- The Committee approved four Resolutions of Impeachment but the House will never approve the Resolutions and send them to the Senate; to, -- The House approved two of the four Resolutions but the Senate will never go to trial; to, -- The Senate may start a trial but it will never hear from live witnesses; to, -- The Senate may hear from live witnesses, but it will never vote to convict.

* The notion that the President’s political operatives are planning an advertising blitz is guaranteed to cause heartburn among his Democratic supporters in the Senate.

* Joe Lockhart sneered at the Republican managers’ brief to the Senate saying, “I mean, I think there is overblown rhetoric in there about sinister plots, and I think that it detracts from the argument they are trying to make.” Excuse me. Let’s apply the detraction test to the stern, earnest, solemn, daily discussions about the vast right wing conspiracy for the past year by White House Spinsters.

* Speaking of conspiracies and plots all the focus on Monica as a witness is like a magician’s misdirection. While we are all distracted by watching the levitating cigar waving in the air the real danger to the White House – as I suggested months ago – is Kathleen Willey and the potential obstruction of justice surrounding the Presidential Pantry Raid.

* The questions the White House is desperate to avoid having answered are: Did anyone in the White House talk to anyone outside the White House about anyone changing their story with respect to Kathleen Willey? If so, who? That’s why they don’t want witnesses.

* President Clinton and the First Lady danced the Tango at a State Dinner for the Argentine President the other night. Of course, they didn’t dance the Tango with each other. THAT would have been news.

* The White House was so disappointed with the Larry Flynt revelations, Chief of Staff John Podesta has ordered all subscriptions to Hustler be cancelled. Maybe Flynt’s Barr disclosure was like holding a no trump hand – he led his fourth highest from his longest and strongest. Or maybe Barr’s it.

* Speaking of Larry Flynt, he doesn’t look anything like he did when he was on “Cheers.”
