What's the Vig on 1.5 Billion?
Monday, April 10, 2000

Albuquerque, New Mexico

  • Albuquerque - An American Indian word meaning: "Far In The Future The White Eyes Will Want To Book A Flight On-Line And Will Not Be Able To Spell It And, After Clicking On The Airport Code Button, Will Type In "ALB" Which Will, He Will Find When He Arrives At The Airport, Have Allowed Him To Book A Great Flight At An Excellent Fare To Albany, New York."

    -- BEGIN SQUISH ALERT --

  • There is a picture of Al Gore clogging up emails around the country which shows him bending over his rifle adjusting the sling. The misplaced amusement comes from the fact that he appears to be about to put a 5.56 mm round right up his left nostril.

  • As many of you know, I am not above poking fun at our National Imperfect Messenger, but I would remind my friends that this photo appears to have been taken in Viet Nam.

  • At the time I was sitting in a National Guard Armory in Parsippany, New Jersey as the unit armorer in a headquarters company of a tank battalion charged with defending central New Jersey against a potential sneak attack from Pennsylvania. During drill weekends I was trained to repair any weapon from a .30 Caliber Carbine to a .45 caliber handgun to a .50 caliber machine gun.

  • During two-week summer camps my principal job was to be the Battalion First Sergeant's driver which included removing the radios every evening so he could take the jeep into town.

  • Before joining in the derisive laughter you should consider whether (like George W.) you were trained to fly a fighter jet, whether (like Al Gore) you served in Viet Nam, or whether you have worn any uniform at all not counting Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or band.

  • The knowledge that the Democrats would, if this were a picture of George W., hang him out to dry makes no difference. It has nothing to do with Bush. Or Gore.

  • It has everything to do with all the young men and women who went. And all the young men and women who didn't come home.

    -- END SQUISH ALERT --

  • On the other hand, Al "I-Invented-Celsius" Gore, should be forced to explain (should he ever hold another press conference) how it is that in this era of global warming the following lead could possibly have been written by the Associated Press yesterday: "An overnight dusting of snow greeted the last day of Washington's springtime Cherry Blossom Festival on Sunday, turning the few remaining blossoms a soggy white." The ONLY think I have liked about Al Gore has been his unswerving support for global warming.

  • Now it begins. The first episode of a week of people acting up because of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Your Nation's Capital occurred yesterday. Here was the AP lead: "Thousands of people clasped hands to form a human chain at the Capitol on Sunday in a show of solidarity with countries they say are trapped in poverty because of the loans they must repay to U.S.-based world lending institutions." Ok. Let's think about the meaning of the word: Loan.

  • If a country doesn't want to repay its loans to the IMF or the World Bank, they should be prepared for a visit from my candidate for the new Cabinet post of Collector General: Tony Soprano.

  • True story: Walking through the Albuquerque Airport, a mom was herding her two small children who were taking care to step on every single crack in the flooring. Catching me smiling at the kids' game she said, "That must be why my back hurts."
